Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

There are "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

This past week the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was not "necessary".

The administration did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting over the phone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the war on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would simply constitute a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of maximalist demands that encompass the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday preceded reports that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he added.
