A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
We are analyzing images and video posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the images were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
