Her Royal Highness's Traditional Festive Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The 1,600 guests will listen to a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The central message of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a message before the concert.
A Gradual Return
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Music and Opportunity
Those coming to the Abbey can listen to budding artists supported by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at the concert.
"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.
A Sisterly Duo
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.
That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
