The saga started with a isolated photograph, arguably the most consequential ever taken of a member of the monarchy.

Present was the Earl of Inverness, arm-in-arm a female youth, while another individual smiled suggestively in the rear.

Without that image, taken at a party in 2001, who would have believed the claims of a teenager who said she was trafficked across the ocean and forced to have brief relations with a individual of the monarchy?

An odd, indicative move by someone who had openly claimed to have never been aware of her, asserted he could no have had intimate contact with her, and yet paid millions of monarchical money to settle a protracted court action.

Over a Decade of Disgrace

In this context, talk of the royal family acting firmly to distance themselves from Andrew are wide of the mark. This affair has persisted for the majority of 15 years since that photograph, and an additional snapshot of Andrew ambling congenially with a convicted sex offender came to light.

• Self-importance: How long did his siblings, maybe even his relatives, know that Andrew was so presumptuous?
• Problematic Connections: They must have realized, if his aides and the law enforcement were doing their jobs, that he had some deeply disreputable associates given he publicly welcomed them to estates.
• Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the household did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with state resources.

Trips were printed in official documents: helicopter travel from the estate to a sporting venue and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of commercial flights, all for the comfort of "the travel enthusiast".

Existence of Entitlement

Then there was the entitlement which demanded respect when he entered a room or the supreme obsession about his royal titles used on his official documents in letters to his friends.

He avoided accountability while his matriarch, who strangely pampered him, was still living. The sovereign did at least remove him of public duties and military positions in the wake of his ill-fated and, as revealed, mendacious public statement six years ago.

Recent Developments

It was only in the last 14 days that events sped up, following the publication of biographical works giving more disturbing details of his behavior and that of his connections.

More information have again exposed Andrew's belief that he could get away with deceiving about his relationship with a notorious figure.

The public (and the journalists) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was no one of any consequence to defend him, a result of all those years of hubris.

Royal Worries

The more intelligent royals realized that. The one imperative is to transfer the institution, if not as before at least whole and unblemished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to undo the legacy of previous monarchs, showing they are beneficial, responsible and reactive to their citizens.

Andrew was putting all that in jeopardy in an age when deference and secrecy is no longer enough.

Consequences

Finally, the well-known indecisive sovereign was pressured additional. There was little choice. The royal household had relinquished authority of the narrative.

Now it is the removal of honorifics and the continued and life-long social disgrace that will hurt Andrew most deeply.
