Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
