Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Debate
The recorded message, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past worked in military or defense positions.
"Like us, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that violate the legal system or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Furious Response
The video message reportedly prompt a angry response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats released a joint declaration censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our country with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the security of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these radical online messages and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement added.
Lawmakers' Firm Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also issued a response.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who care for this nation and made an vow to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it punishable by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature instructing troops to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the representative said. "There are active officials of the US Congress who conspired to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
