Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
