Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind British Technology to Track Down Afghans Who Worked With Allied Forces, Inquiry Hears

A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK abandoned sensitive technology permitting Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands in Danger

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the data leak were advised to change residences and change their contact details to ensure their safety from militant forces.

MPs are currently examining the UK government's management of a massive disclosure of private information involving approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to relocate to the UK to avoid the regime.

Data Disclosure Occurred

A data file containing confidential details, comprising names, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by an official working at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The breach became known months later, when details of several individuals who had sought to move to the UK were posted on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is a false assumption that the Taliban do not have similar capabilities that western nations possess,” she told lawmakers.

When questioned about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, the source confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Early investigations provided to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty family members and colleagues of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction regarding the breach was implemented in last year and restricted any information regarding the matter from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the source and the volunteer organization associated with advised affected households they were working with that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate if they could and switched their mobile numbers. That constituted the two main details that, should militant forces obtained such data, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A disputed that internal investigation conducted by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to determine that the acquisition of the records by militant forces was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are not confronting the authorities; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing abuse endured by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
